With The Pitt Season 2 leaving its audience in an unsettled state due to the explicit nature of the cases depicted in Episode 2, executive producer John Wells has explained why exploring such issues was necessary. In a recent interview, he disclosed that The Pitt tackles cases of the explicit kind in its sequel season, not to make its viewers uneasy, but to make them privy to the harsh realities of the healthcare sector.
John Wells says they are ‘not trying to gross’ out The Pitt fans with Season 2 cases
While speaking with Deadline, Wells opened up about the wild cases that Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) and company have to deal with in The Pitt’s latest episode. He remarked that it was done to highlight the adversities that ER professionals go through on a regular basis.
Talking about the cases of The Pitt Season 2 Episode 2, Wells noted, “It’s important, and we’re not trying to gross you out. We’re trying to say, ‘This is what is happening when you’re in that waiting room for hours.’ They’re off doing things that have to be done, and they’re doing things for us. Whether it’s your individual problem or someone else’s problem, they’re the ones who step in and do the things that you don’t want to do.”
Notably, in The Pitt Season 2 premiere, Robby’s team manually helps a patient struggling with constipation. Similarly, in Episode 2, the medical experts deal with a priapism case, which involves the use of needles around the patient’s genitals. Another case centers around a maggot infestation, leading to a gritty, unpleasant treatment sequence.
“We’re not trying to challenge you to watch the show,” Wells added. “We’re trying to say, ‘This is what these people do for us because they are there for us when we have needs.’ And it’s the things that you wouldn’t do in the same way. I would never run into a fire, which firemen do all the time. They do things that I would never do. And thank God that there’s someone who has the dedication to this profession that’s prepared to do those things,” he concluded.
The Pitt Season 2 releases new episodes every Thursday at 9 PM on HBO Max.
