Hijack Season 2 Reviews Claim It’s Not Better Than Season 1

Idris Elba’s Hijack has returned for a second season. Critics are already weighing in on the high-stakes Apple TV+ thriller. As reviews come in after the premiere, one message is clear. It is not great news for fans of Season 1.

Hijack Season 2 reviews are in

Critics agree that Hijack Season 2 doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessor. Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut called it “a case of diminishing returns,” adding, “There’s another hijacking because the show is called Hijack, and Sam is caught up in it because Elba’s the lead.” James Dyer at Empire noted that while Idris Elba remains “the show’s charismatic core,” the season ultimately becomes “a lesser if still compelling outing.”

Jean Henegan of Pop Culture Maniacs gave it 2/5, writing: “Here we are, staring down the barrel of season two of a show that felt like a limited series from the jump.” Katie Doll from CBR rated it 4/10, stating the show is “a painfully disjointed and thematically trifling ride.” Nick Schager at The Daily Beast added, “There’s only so much the headliner can do to enliven a story that builds on its predecessor in predictable ways.”

The season shifts from a hijacked plane to a Berlin U-Bahn train. Ready Steady Cut’s Wilson noted the subway lacks the same “innate terrors” as a plane, resulting in “very similar-looking carriages” and a “stuttering” journey. Empire’s James Dyer observed that “the passengers take a disappointingly literal back seat,” with only “Christian Näthe’s put-upon train driver Otto, Lisa Vicari’s control room operator Clara, and Toby Jones as… British intelligence officer Peter Faber” standing out.

Thematically, the season attempts to connect to Season 1, but critics say it leans heavily on exposition. Wilson wrote that the show “is ultimately imitating the first batch,” while Dyer remarked the story “thrashes around like a live wire,” with the finale “losing momentum.”

Rotten Tomatoes has not yet posted a critic or audience score, but most current critic reviews listed are negative.
