Ricky Gervais may have won the Golden Globes for the relatively new category of Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, but that did not stop Wanda Sykes from trolling the veteran comic about his earlier jokes on the trans community that attracted plenty of backlash. Gervais did not turn up for the award himself, but Sykes accepted it on The Office actor’s behalf.
Wanda Sykes thanks God and trans community after Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globe Win
During the Golden Globes 2026, presenter Wanda Sykes trolled Ricky Gervais for his controversial jokes against the transgender community. The jokes received plenty of backlash at the time. She also mentioned “god” during her comments, referencing the fact that Gervais was an atheist.
Speaking about Gervais ahead of the winner announcement, Sykes said, “I love you for not being here. I love you, Ricky, but if you win, I get to accept the award on your behalf, and you are going to thank God and the trans community.”
Wanda Sykes also took some funny digs at the other nominees. “You give us so much, but I would love a little less. Try less,” she said about Bill Maher and added, “You are handsome. You’ve got that great super villain voice, and you are charming. You would’ve made a great Menendez brother,” about Brett Goldstein.
She said about Kevin Hart, “Kevin is the richest guy in this category, and yet I know he wants it the most. You’re a true American, Kevin.” She also said about Kumail Nanjiani, “love that you prove that male comedians can be funny without being chubby,” and added about Sarah Silverman, “I love that we are such close friends. We haven’t talked in five years, but we are so close.”
Ricky Gervais won the award for his Netflix special, Morality. He had also won the inaugural award for his 2024 special, Armageddon.
