The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly signed a new tight end on a reserve/future deal amid ongoing speculation about Travis Kelce’s retirement. The team struggled to dominate this season, ultimately being brought out of playoff contention following a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. This marked their first postseason elimination since 2014. With Kelce’s contract having expired, a decision on whether he will return to the field or conclude his NFL career is still pending.
Chiefs sign new Tight End amid Travis Kelce’s rumors, claims report
A to Z Sports’ Charles Goldman recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal the Kansas City Chiefs’ new signing. He wrote, “The Chiefs signed TE Tre Watson to a reserve/future deal. Watson spent the season on the team’s practice squad.” Born in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Watson began his career as a two-sport athlete, playing for two teams during his time at Cleveland High School: as a guard for the basketball team and a wide receiver for the football team.
While he excelled at both sports, he chose a path in football after enrolling at California State University, Fresno. There, he was a tight end for the Bulldogs in 2022. He played two seasons at the university before being transferred to Texas A&M University in 2024. His football career took an impressive turn when the Kansas City Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent. He was assigned to the practice squad, with his latest reported signing for the future with the team. Watson’s signing has surfaced amid the ongoing retirement rumors around Kelce.
While Kelce has yet to reveal his final decision, an insider recently shared an update about his retirement with The Daily Mail, teasing the possibility that he might give another season a shot. The insider said, “He took the end of this season in his stride and, if it is his last, he will be content with it. But he also saw Philip Rivers come back and saw the fun he had with one more go around. So he would like to run it back one more time with a healthy Patrick Mahomes and a strong team to give it one more go to reach the Super Bowl.”
