Burlesque Star on How Major On-Set Drama Impacted 2010 Movie

Cher says Burlesque had everything it needed to be a crowd favorite, but messy behind-the-scenes drama held it back. While the 2010 musical later found a cult following, she admits making the film wasn’t exactly a smooth ride. In a recent interview, Cher opened up about the tension on set and explained how those issues stopped the movie from fully achieving its potential.

Cher reflects on her 2010 movie Burlesque

Cher, now 79, looked back on her Burlesque days during a Jan. 5 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. She was joined by former co-star Kristen Bell. Cher played Tess Scali, the strong yet big-hearted owner of the Burlesque Lounge, while Christina Aguilera led the film as Ali, a small-town singer chasing big dreams in Los Angeles. Bell appeared as Nikki, one of the club’s standout performers.

When the topic shifted to the making of the film, Cher said it could’ve been a fun, great movie if not for “you-know-who… except for both of them.” Bell backed her up, calling the shoot a “hard” one. Shepard, who was dating Bell at the time, filled in some blanks without dropping names. He said there was a romance between two powerful people tied to the movie, and their issues kept spilling over onto the set.

Cher also shared a personal sore spot tied to the film’s music. She revealed that one top figure actually wanted to cut her song “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from the movie. “He said, ‘I’m cutting that song because I don’t want Cher to ruin my movie,’” she recalled. The song stayed in the film and went on to win a Golden Globe.

Reports that came out around the film’s release later spilled more tea on what was really going on. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that director Steven Antin and Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper, who were longtime partners, had major clashes during production.
