Why Leonardo DiCaprio Thinks Future of Movie Theaters Isn’t Promising

Leonardo DiCaprio has shared concerns about the future of cinema amid changing theatrical trends. He discussed these worries in a recent interview, where he reflected on the evolving moviegoing experience alongside the rise of streaming platforms.

What Leonardo DiCaprio said about movie theaters

Over the past several years, creatives and audiences have grown increasingly concerned about the diminishing impact of theatrical releases. Many cite changing viewing habits and evolving industry dynamics as key factors. As films have become more accessible and streaming giants have expanded their hold on the market, the film landscape has shifted. This shift has changed how the industry produces, distributes, and consumes movies worldwide.

During his interview with The Times, Leonardo DiCaprio, who recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, noted that the film landscape was “changing at a lightning speed.”

The actor elaborated, “We’re looking at a huge transition. First, documentaries disappeared from cinemas. Now, dramas only get finite time and people wait to see it on streamers. I don’t know.” He continued, “Do people still have the appetite? Or will cinemas become silos, like jazz bars?”

People have widely discussed the concerns DiCaprio raised in recent years.

However, the Titanic star added that he remains hopeful about what lies ahead. “I just hope enough people, who are real visionaries, get opportunities to do unique things in the future that are seen in the cinema,” he said. “But that remains to be seen.”

Leonardo DiCaprio also previously expressed apprehension about AI’s role in filmmaking. While he acknowledged that it could serve as an “enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something we’ve never seen before,” he emphasized that it lacks the human element that defines art.

“I think anything that is going to be authentically thought of as art has to come from the human being,” he said (via THR).

One Battle After Another is now available for streaming on Max.
