One Battle After Another’s Benicio Del Toro on if He’ll Ever Direct

Golden Globe winner Benicio Del Toro recently revealed in an interview whether he’d ever direct a movie someday. The actor, who recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, also spoke about Latino representation and SNL, among other things.

Benicio del Toro wants ‘to tell a story that comes from’ his own experience

Benicio del Toro sat down with Variety for an interview recently, post the success of his latest release, One Battle After Another. In this film, he took on the role of Sensei Sergio St. Carlos. During the interview, del Toro discussed Latino representation in Hollywood and wanting to host SNL someday, while also revealing a few directors he looks forward to working with. However, emphasizing on his drive to help empower Latinos, he revealed that he would like to direct a film someday.

“Maybe one day. Right now I’m prepping another acting project,” he said, adding, “but I’ve had an incredible education just from the filmmakers I’ve worked with.” Further, while speaking about bringing a story to life from his own experiences within the Latino community, he said, “At some point, I’d like to tell a story that comes from my experience — being American, being Latino, living in this moment.”

The actor further added, “I’m not saying I’m the voice. That voice is probably in high school or college right now. But we need more young Latinos feeling like it’s possible. If my work helps shine a light for someone, that matters.”

Del Toro also mentioned filmmakers he has not yet collaborated with but wants to. “There are many. Scorsese, Spielberg, Spike Lee, Kathryn Bigelow. The Coen brothers. Tarantino — I actually auditioned for Reservoir Dogs.” And filmmakers like Barry Jenkins and Celine Song. I feel like I could work well with them too,” he shared.
