‘Innately Funny’ Ryan Reynolds Made ‘Just Friends’ Actor Break Character

Besides his acting prowess and charming on-screen presence, Ryan Reynolds is famous for his incredible comedic timing. Amy Smart reveals ‘Just Friends’ scene where Ryan Reynolds ‘was just losing it’

Amy Smart recently got candid with PEOPLE about her experience while shooting the 2005 rom-com “Just Friends,” starring her and Ryan Reynolds. Praising the actor’s “innate” comedic talent, Smart shared that it was a challenge to hold back her laughter during their scenes together.

“What I enjoyed about this is obviously a lot of my scenes are with Ryan, and he is just innately so funny that it was a big challenge to hold the laughter in”, the “Road Trip” actress said. Recalling Reynolds’ shenanigans while shooting a funny scene from “Just Friends,” Smart said, “I think the scene where he’s freaking out in the car, and she has to return his gloves… it was one take, and I do break a little bit in it, but I tried my best to keep a straight face.”

“He was just losing it! In the best way, so it was really hard,” she added. “When I think back to my fondest memories of it, aside from being so cold and having so much fun in all the scenes, Ryan in the fat suit was the most endearing thing I’ve ever seen,” the actress fondly said.

For viewers yet to watch the movie, the rom-com “Just Friends” is the heartwarming story of Chris Brander, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, a former high school outcast turned successful adult who returns to his roots, seeking solace in the familiarity of his hometown. His childhood haven is embodied by Jamie Palamino, his steadfast best friend, played by Amy Smart, who remained loyal to her hometown despite his exit. As they reconnect, the duo tries to revive their old bond, finding comfort in nostalgia while accepting each other’s growth and differences.
