David Letterman Recalls When He Was Mistaken for Dick Van Dyke

David Letterman recently laughed over a recent mix-up where he was mistaken for veteran actor Dick Van Dyke. Letterman probably thought that it was little far-fetched to be confused with someone who is older than him by 21 years as he is 78 years old himself.

David Letterman said on Jimmy Kimmel Live that fans don’t recognize him as easily as they used to, as it has been more than a decade since The Late Show with David Letterman ended.

Letterman said, “Here’s what happens to me now — people used to know who I am, and now I have to wear a name tag to get anything going.” He said a man walked up to him at a farmer’s market and asked if Letterman was Dick Van Dyke, who turns 100 on December 13, 2025.

He shared, “A guy comes up to me and he says, ‘Excuse me, are you who I think you are?’ And now, I’m all loaded up and I respond, ‘Well, that depends on who you think I are. That always gets a big laugh. I said, ‘Who do you think I am?’ He said, ‘Dick Van Dyke,’ and I said, ‘No! What?!'”

He said fan reactions have changed a lot over the years. After he left his show, fans continued to tell him how much they still missed him. “And then when I left, it was, ‘Oh, we miss you.’ And then it would be, ‘Oh, my mother watches you now every night. She really misses you now that you’re gone.’ Lately it’s, ‘You know what, I’d like a picture of you to show to my grandfather, and his father also, because we used to watch it together in the hospital.’ Just like that.”

After leaving The Late Show in 2015, he returned with his Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. The new season premieres December 16 and features major stars.
