Hugh Jackman ‘Not Sorry’ For Reprising His Iconic Role

Hugh Jackman doesn’t have any remorse about returning to play The Wolverine despite saying he was done with the character. The 57-year-old has been the face of Wolverine since the beginning of this millennium. However, he decided to quit playing the Marvel mutant in 2017. Still, Jackman returned to the silver screen as The Wolverine in 2024, and he doesn’t mind that he broke his own word in doing so.

Hugh Jackman has this to say about returning to the iconic Wolverine role

Jackman wasn’t keen on reappearing onscreen as The Wolverine after Logan featured the death of the character in 2017. The 57-year-old Australian actor also informed those concerned that he would never play The Wolverine on screen again. However, Jackman broke his word after Ryan Reynolds came up to him with Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Reynolds and Jackman-starrer faced several challenges due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, after beginning filming in May 2023. The movie finally hit theaters on July 25, 2024, and became a major box-office hit, earning over $1 billion worldwide.

The Real Steel actor appeared on a recent episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors talk show with Cynthia Erivo, where he discussed the entire process that propelled him to reprise his iconic Wolverine character. Jackman highlighted that the passage of time and the change in his situation led him to rethink his decision to play Wolverine. He might have ended up breaking his own vow, but he told Erivo how he doesn’t feel “sorry” about it in any way.

“[I thought,] I’ve told everyone that I’m done [playing Wolverine]. I’m not one of those guys [who break vows],” said the Australian actor. “Then I went, ‘You know what? I [will] change my mind.’ It’s not that big of a deal. I’m not even gonna say I’m sorry. And it was so awesome.”

Jackman doesn’t need to be apologetic, as playing or not playing Wolverine on screen is entirely his personal decision. However, the box-office numbers of Deadpool & Wolverine indicate that fans were indeed missing him as The Wolverine.
