Michael B Jordan on who his favorite pop culture vampire is
In an interview with PEOPLE, Michael B. Jordan said that he liked Vampires in Brooklyn. It stars Eddie Murphy in the lead role as a vampire named Maximilian. The trailer for the film teases the joke, “The world’s last vampire is about to encounter something infinitely more terrifying than himself: Brooklyn.”
Sinners finds Jordan playing twin brothers who run a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi and face a dangerous vampire threat. The lead actor has talked about how this role has challenged him.
He expressed, “When Ryan (Coogler) first called me about the role, it was a little bit of a shock. It caught me off guard. I was a little anxious, but sometimes those nerves are a good thing. I had an equal amount of excitement about playing that role” (via Deadline).
Recalling what it was like reading the script of Sinners for the first time, Jordan said, “Ryan knows me very well, and for me, the challenge was definitely the main thing.” Jordan admitted that he was “nervous” but also “excited” and “learned to trust” Coogler. The actor continued, “He doesn’t say things he doesn’t mean, so when he pitches an idea to me, I know he thought long and hard about it and took a lot into consideration” (via Deadline).
Further, he shared, “And when he says, ‘Hey, yo, I wrote this for you,’ how can you not respond as an artist? He’s taken the time to think it through, and he also looks at it from my perspective: I think this is going to be really great for you.”
He described the experience as “powerful,” telling Coogler, “I haven’t seen you do anything like this. This is going to be a challenge. You started hitting all these points with me as an actor, as a person?”
Jordan also added that he always tries to “grow and evolve” and so when he read the script, “it paid off, delivered on everything.”
