Some fans believed Robert Pattinson and Zendaya had seemingly gotten engaged before it was revealed that it was for an upcoming movie, The Drama. The surprising news broke via a traditional newspaper announcement, cleverly blurring the lines between fiction and reality.
Robert Pattinson and Zendaya announce fake engagement
A staged engagement announcement for Robert Pattinson and Zendaya appeared in the Boston Globe this week, promoting their A24 film The Drama. The notice appeared in the Living/Arts section and featured the same portrait used on the film’s poster. According to the newspaper, editors held the TV Critic’s Corner column to accommodate the placement.
This inventive stunt precedes the upcoming trailer release for the long-anticipated project from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli, known for the critically acclaimed Dream Scenario. The ad coyly notes the couple “will wed on April 3 in Boston, MA,” which is basically The Drama’s confirmed theatrical release date of April 3, 2026.
According to the ad copy, Pattinson’s character, Charlie Thompson, is the Director of the Cambridge Art Museum. He’s also an Eaton College graduate and holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Tufts University. On the other hand, Zendaya’s character, Emma Harwood, is a Boston University honors graduate. She has an English degree and works at Mission Books. The notice also reveals she is the daughter of a decorated military veteran.
The significant age gap and life experience difference between Charlie, who graduated from college in 2004, and Emma, who finished high school in 2013, may hint at the complex relationship at the The Drama’s core. Little else is known about the plot. However, reportedly, it is a romantic drama where a couple’s wedding week happens due to disturbing, long-hidden truths. The supporting cast includes Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim, and Hailey Gates.
All in all, this marketing ploy has successfully ignited fan curiosity for the movie, which reunites the Dune co-stars. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are also going to be seen together in Dune: Part Three and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
