Eric Dane To Detail Life & ALS Struggles in Upcoming Memoir

Actor Eric Dane has been battling ALS for a while, with his condition progressively getting worse. The Grey’s Anatomy alum opens up about his battle with the disease in his upcoming memoir, set for release in 2026. Through the book, he hopes to help “someone find meaning in their own days.”

Eric Dane reveals new memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments

Eric Dane has released a press statement about his upcoming memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, and its significance. “I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real—this illness, this challenge, and that’s exactly why I’m writing this book,” the Last Ship star explained (via Entertainment Weekly).

“I want to capture the moments that shaped me—the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted,” Dane added. “So that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart. If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.”

The Euphoria star was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor neurons, leading to eventual paralysis.

The 53-year-old publicly shared his diagnosis in April of this year. “I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane told PEOPLE. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

Later in June, the Countdown actor provided an update: “I have one functioning arm. My left side is functioning. My right side has completely stopped working” (via USA Today). Further, in September, he was publicly seen bound to a wheelchair in Washington, DC (via Daily Mail).

Eric Dane is widely known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2021, and as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria. However, his acting career began more than a decade before these iconic roles. He gained popularity with movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, in which he portrayed Multiple Man. He also appeared as Sebastian, Owen Wilson’s friend, in Marley & Me.
