Hit Canadian crime drama Murder in a Small Town may have just wrapped its second season, but program creator Ian Weir has reportedly already started drawing the blueprint for Season 3. The acclaimed playwright confirmed in a recent interview that he is eagerly waiting for Fox to officially renew his series and has begun formulating plot points he’d want to explore if a third season ends up happening.

Speaking to Soaps.com, Weir admitted that Murder in a Small Town has the potential to go on for more seasons, acknowledging the immense growth in the show’s popularity since its premiere.
“Well, I’m an optimistic guy. I’m hoping like heck that the show is renewed,” Weir said before adding, “I think the show has more legs. I’ve been really thrilled by the response from the audience this season. I think the show has grown over Season 1 in the ways that we really hoped it would grow. The numbers have continued to grow in a way that’s really heartening to us.”
Additionally, the Murder in a Small Town showrunner confirmed that he had “started cracking ideas for Season 3 storylines.” Notably, the Season 2 finale sees Karl propose to Cassandra. However, the episode concludes without revealing the librarian’s answer, leaving things on a cliffhanger.
Talking about the possible plot points he’d address if Murder in a Small Town Season 3 gets greenlit, Weir noted, “I’m also really fascinated by the whole question of Karl’s past and what he’s bringing from that past, and who from that past might perhaps make an appearance. He alludes to contact with his father in Episode 10. Were we to get a Season 3, I would be fascinated to explore what that might involve.”
He further teased the return of Warren, Cassandra’s problematic former friend, in the series’ near future. Weir remarked that this was something he was “extremely interested in exploring, because it was a pivotal experience for Cassandra. It had a lot to do with her issues with trust, for instance, and openness.”
At the time of writing, Fox hasn’t officially renewed Murder in a Small Town for Season 3.
