David Bowie’s Blackstar Instagram Miniseries Arrives

A David Bowie Instagram series called “Unbound” has made its debut on InstaMiniSeries, an account created in 2014 by New York City-based actress and producer Nikki Borges and Amanda De La Nuez. The intent of the series is to tell short stories utilizing Instagram’s 15-second video limitations to present an unprecedented level of access to the music and images from Bowie’s final album Blackstar, which the late icon offered with “no limits or preconditions.”

The enigmatic series features “evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album’s music, lyrics and artwork” rather than a “literal, linear narrative,” according to a press release on Bowie’s site. Included in the participating cast are Rookie Mag editor-in-chief Tavi Gevinson, as the protagonist, actress Patricia Clarkson (The Green Mile, Far From Heaven, Dogville) as a lounge singer and more.

The 16-part series was written by Carolynn Cecilia and directed by Borges, with new episodes to be released every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

“I treated the album if it was a collection of short stories,” Cecilia says. “You’re going to see a peak inside each [‘Blackstar’] track. You’re not going to see a literal interpretation, but what the music, the mood, and the tone inspired. It’s a world of characters at a very particular time in their life.”

Watch the first two offerings below – but be warned, this is strictly for fans. To the casual viewer, this will not make sense.
