The Cat and the Hatchet Poster Previews Bizarre Dr. Seuss-Inspired Horror Movie

Dr. Seuss‘ iconic cat is getting a disturbing horror makeover in The Cat and the Hatchet. The upcoming short reimagines the familiar children’s character as a sinister figure. Its newly released poster offers a first look at the project. The film teases a darker take on a story known for its playful mischief.

Bloody Disgusting shared the poster on X, announcing that the horror short will premiere on October 31, 2026. Designed by James Gross, the artwork features the tagline “Fun Comes With A Price.” The tagline hints that the cat’s arrival brings more than harmless fun. Directed by Cameron Dodd, the project brings its twisted take on the familiar character to audiences this Halloween.

What is The Cat and the Hatchet about?

The Cat and the Hatchet follows siblings Ellie and Connor, whose day takes a frightening turn when Scratches the Cat appears at their home. Instead of entertaining the children with playful antics, the mysterious visitor brings a twisted sense of humor. His arrival turns their ordinary day into a nightmare.

Mark Ricci stars as Scratches the Cat, with William Brandt Baker playing Connor and Lilah Hewson portraying Ellie. Ricci and Kaleb Carmichael serve as producers, with Six Side Studios and Prime Capitol backing the project.

The short takes a darker approach to a familiar children’s character, which contrasts the original story’s playful tone with a sinister horror premise. Its poster reinforces that shift, while the tagline suggests that the cat’s idea of fun comes with dangerous consequences.

The Cat and the Hatchet presents an unauthorized, non-profit parody and has no affiliation with the official The Cat in the Hat property. Rather than serving as an official adaptation, it offers an independent horror reinterpretation of the popular character.

For horror fans, the short offers an unusual way to revisit a familiar fictional character. Its October 31 premiere also makes it a timely addition to the Halloween season.
