Viral Horror Video Game Finally Gets Movie Adaptation News Fans Have Been Waiting For

A multiplayer horror game is getting a movie adaptation, bringing its unusual alien-invasion premise to the big screen. The Headliners is set to bring its combination of survival horror and journalism to the big screen.

According to a Variety report, Studiocanal’s genre label Sixth Dimension is developing the feature adaptation. Jed Benedict, head of Sixth Dimension, described the game as a fresh take on alien invasion stories. He said, “In a world where attention is currency, Kafi Games’ indie smash The Headliners struck us, along with millions of giddy gamers, as a hilarious and unique entry point into the alien invasion genre.”

Inside The Headliners Alien Horror Game

Released in 2025 by Kafi Games, The Headliners was developed by Lucas Bouyoux and Bruno Grégoire. The PC game supports up to eight players, who play journalists exploring an alien-infested New York City. Their mission is to capture front-page-worthy photographs while avoiding deadly extraterrestrial attacks. This setup combines cooperative survival gameplay with the pressure of getting the perfect shot.

The game remains a PC exclusive and has sold more than 1.5 million copies since its release. Benedict also outlined the team’s approach to adapting the game’s premise for the big screen. He said, “As if ‘Cloverfield’ met ‘Ghostbusters’ via ‘Nightcrawler,’ we aim to take Kafi Games’ brilliantly original survival-horror game and watch the mayhem unfold through the cameras of the journalists who risk everything, life and limb, for the perfect shot.”

Sixth Dimension launched on February 20, as Studiocanal’s in-house genre label. Its projects include the Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot and Roth’s Ice Cream Man. The label is also developing a feature adaptation of the video game Home Safety Hotline. The upcoming project reflects Hollywood’s growing interest in video game properties.

The filmmakers have yet to share further story details or production plans for The Headliners’ adaptation. The director, cast, and release date have not been announced.
