Sacha Baron Cohen does not plan to return as Borat or Bruno after making his new Ali G movie. The actor has described the challenges of his undercover comedy and suggested that he is ready to leave the genre behind.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cohen discussed why Ali G: Who Iz I? could be his last guerrilla comedy. He explained that these projects have become increasingly difficult and risky to make. The actor also discussed the backlash and death threats he has faced, saying he fears his luck could eventually run out.
Sacha Baron Cohen explains why he may be done with Borat and Bruno for good
Cohen was firm when asked about returning to his previous characters. Discussing a potential third Borat film, he said, “So again, I’m not doing Borat 3, which also would be incredibly challenging.” He added that his latest movie was the most challenging film he had ever made and that he does not intend to make similar projects in the future. When the interviewer suggested he might eventually return to the genre, Cohen insisted, “No, no, I really have had enough. I know you don’t believe me.” He then joked that he hoped the interviewer would not quote his statement back to him six years later.
Cohen also discussed the difficulty of keeping his characters recognizable while preserving the element of surprise. His comedy depends on people thinking that Borat, Bruno, and Ali G are real people. However, as these characters become more famous, it becomes harder to surprise people and capture genuine reactions.
Despite his decision, Cohen still sees comedy as a way to discuss serious issues. He explained why he still makes this kind of comedy, saying, “Because I’m terrified of where our society is headed, and the way I can comment on that is through my comedy.” He also discussed extremism across the political spectrum and what he described as “the danger of virtuous violence.”
Sacha Baron Cohen’s comments indicate that Borat 3 and Bruno 2 are not part of his plans, as he shifts his attention towards other projects.
