Sydney Sweeney and Friends With Benefits director Will Gluck’s R-rated rom-com is now available to stream on HBO Max. Also starring Glen Powell, the 2023 Columbia Pictures film was previously available on Netflix and other major PVOD platforms.
Anyone But You is now streaming on HBO Max. Directed by Will Gluck, the film adapted William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Ilana Wolpert developed the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Gluck. The Friends With Benefits filmmaker produced the feature with Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum.
“After an amazing first date, Bea (Sweeney) and Ben’s (Glen Powell) fiery attraction turns ice cold — until they find themselves unexpectedly reunited at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple,” reads the official synopsis.
How Anyone But You became one of the biggest romantic comedy successes in recent years
Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, the film opened in theaters on December 22, 2023, and earned praise from audiences. Despite receiving mixed critical reception, it became a commercial success and demonstrated the box office potential of theatrical romantic comedies.
Produced on a modest budget of $25 million, Anyone But You grossed over $88 million domestically and crossed $219 million globally. Much of the film’s success came from its viral promotional campaign, the stars’ on-screen chemistry, and rumors of a real-life romance between them.
Powell’s relationship with model Gigi Paris ended around the time the campaign gained momentum. As rumors about a romance with Sweeney grew, the two actors played along to help promote the film.
The attention surrounding Powell and Sweeney gave a boost to the film’s promotional campaign and its box office. Despite the romance rumors, the actors said they enjoyed working together and respected each other.
ComingSoon rated the film 5/10, noting in its review that the film is “one of the most cliché, predictable films of the year.”
