Netflix Makes Shocking Move as One of Company’s Most Important Employees Gets Fired

Amid reports of layoffs at Netflix, a key member of the leadership team will also step back from their responsibilities at the streaming giant. Netflix has removed Dan Lin, its head of film, from his role after nearly three years with the company. The move follows the streamer’s layoff of about 1,000 employees last week.

Lin was reportedly asked to step down at the start of the weekend and will guide his team through a transition on Monday. According to Variety, he attended Saturday’s Academy Gala and Sunday’s screening of La Bola Negra. His ousting comes days after Netflix showed the door on other film leadership, including Doug Belgrad and Sheroum Kim.

It has not yet been revealed who will take up Lin’s responsibilities after his exit. Speculation suggests Peter Rice, who took over as CCO, will be responsible for finding his replacement. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the former heads of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, are reportedly being eyed for the role.

The latest exit comes amid a turbulent period for Netflix’s leadership

Rice took over after Bela Bajaria’s exit. Bajaria, a former Disney executive, joined Netflix in 2016. The company promoted her to Chief Content Officer in 2023. Industry speculation long suggested Bajaria was on her way out, but the streamer denied it.

The leadership change comes at a time when Netflix’s performance has been struggling with critics, fans, and investors alike. Several flagship seasons have seen declining year-over-year views, and shares have dipped 40% in the last year.

The 1,000 layoffs accounted for about 6% of Netflix’s current workforce. Most layoffs came from the product, technology, legal, and HR teams, though other parts of the company were also affected.
