Happy Death Day will soon add a new entry to the popular black-comedy slasher franchise. However, it won’t be the next film as fans expect.
Blumhouse’s iconic horror movies will transition from the big screen to comics, including Happy Death Day, Entertainment Weekly reports. The big move comes as part of the production company’s deal with IDW Publishing.
IDW Dark’s lead editor Heather Antos revealed additional details about the comic book ahead of Christopher Landon’s anticipated Happy Death Day 3. Antos teased brief details while talking about her interaction with Landon. “He got to tell me exactly what his plan is for Happy Death Day 3, should they ever get to do it,” she said. “Are there ways in the comics that we can lean into that while also leaving room for them to tell the story that they want to tell should they get to?”
Acclaimed writer Tim Seeley (Venom War: Deadpool) will handle the Happy Death Day comic.
How Blumhouse is expanding its horror franchises beyond the big screen
Happy Death Day isn’t the only Blumhouse universe getting a comic book expansion. The Purge series, which began in 2013, will also receive a comic treatment. Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) and artist Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt) will oversee the project.
Without revealing exact story details on The Purge comic, Heather Antos said, “What we’re doing is an entirely new place and a new town, a new environment than we’ve gotten to see explored in the Purge universe so far.” She mentioned that the focus will remain on finding the “types of people who would engage in Purge Night and how they might not view themselves as the villains.”
Then there’s the M3GAN franchise, which kicked off in 2022 with a hit movie. “The world needs more M3GAN stories,” Antos said. “She can do anything and go anywhere that we want her to. She has that uncanny valley appeal to her that works really, really well in the horror franchise.”
None of the comic books based on Blumhouse movies have received their release windows yet.
