Weird Al Director Is Turning Popular Medieval Times Dinner Theater Experience Into a Movie

A Medieval Times dinner theater experience movie is in the works from the director of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The movie from Paramount Pictures is reportedly in early development.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, director Eric Appel is involved in developing the proposed project and Blaise Hemingway will write the movie’s script. The plot is based on the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament show. This live theater experience has been the most sought-after North American dinner attraction since 1983.

The official logline reads, “When a struggling employee at the Orlando Medieval Times accidentally unleashes a real 9th-century knight, along with an ancient evil necromancer, he has to team up with the feral warrior to save the castle, then the world, and finally win the respect he’s always craved.”

What else has Eric Appel worked on besides the Weird Al movie?

Eric Appel has worked on several well-known projects as a writer and director. His credit includes TV shows like Silicon Valley, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, and Son of Zorn. He has also directed movies, including The Breadwinner and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. As Appel has experience in animation, he has also contributed to several animated projects. Son of Zorn is an animated and live-action sitcom directed by him that follows Zorn, an animated warrior from the island of Zephyri. The synopsis of Son of Zorn reads, “Animation and live action collide when a cartoon Barbarian dad leaves his war-torn village to reconnect with his moody, non-animated teenage son in suburbia.”

The 2022 quirky comedy Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, featuring Daniel Radcliffe as the titular lead, was directed and co-written by Appel. It is a biographical film on the life of musician “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The 46-year-old filmmaker directed and executive-produced the action-comedy series and movie spinoff Die Hart and Die Hart 2: Die Harter. The franchise follows Kevin Hart as a fictionalized version of himself. Eric Appel has also directed four episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including the Season 2 Halloween episode.
