Apple TV’s New Mountain Climbing Movie With 100% RT Score Quickly Becomes a Massive Streaming Hit

Apple TV‘s new documentary about one of history’s most dangerous mountaineering expeditions is quickly becoming a streaming favorite. The Last First: Winter K2, which currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has reached the top spot in multiple regions.

According to FlixPatrol, the documentary has become one of Apple TV’s top offerings in regions like Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Finland, and Greece. It remains in the top five in multiple countries.

The documentary has drawn viewers since its October 2 debut. Amir Bar-Lev directed it, and Howard T. Owens, Ben Silverman, Sean Richard, Sarah Thomson, and John Battsek produced it. Dogwoof and Apple Original Films distribute it.

The story behind The Last First: Winter K2

The documentary looks at several expeditions launched with one goal: to scale K2, the second-highest peak in the world after Mount Everest. The Last First focuses on expeditions launched between 2020 and 2021, as the mountain has seen multiple successful and tragic attempts to scale it since the 1950s.

What is peculiar about the expeditions launched between 2020 and 2021 is that they became the first successful winter ascents of the mountain. The expedition was especially dangerous because of extreme temperatures, rockfall, near-vertical faces, and frigid snowstorms.

The documentary follows John Snorri Sigurjónsson, an Icelandic husband and father of six. He is accompanied by Pakistani mountaineer Ali Sadpara and his son. The movie also explores the commercial side of mountaineering and its impact on the industry and the mountains at large. The documentary doesn’t pull any punches, chronicling the dangers, disasters, and threats to life that come with a hobby like mountaineering.
