Sydney Sweeney and Marilyn Monroe have just been proven to be linked. As it turns out, the two popular Hollywood sex symbols share an ancestor. New research traces their connection through this ancestor.
The global family history platform MyHeritage has confirmed that Sweeney, the era’s raging Hollywood heartthrob, and Monroe, the beauty queen of the 50s, are 9th cousins, once removed.
Their connection reportedly traces through their paternal lines: Sydney through her father, Steven Sweeney, and Marilyn through her biological father, Charles Stanley Gifford. Their shared ancestor, meanwhile, is Ezra Perry (c.1625–1689). Perry is said to have been an early settler in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Of course, reports that Monroe and Sweeney are related are nothing new. Ever since the Euphoria star stepped into the limelight, people have compared her to Monroe. Over the years, people have repeatedly described her as a modern-day Marilyn Monroe, from her Old Hollywood styling and blonde bombshell image to the constant, keen attention that surrounds her public image and relationships.
For instance, earlier this year, Sweeney drew strong comparisons to the sex symbol of the 50s and 60s when she wore a 73-year-old vintage Cecil Chapman gown that closely echoed one of Monroe’s most recognizable looks. With this new genealogical study officially linking the two as heretically connected, Sweeney’s comparisons to Monroe inevitably take on new meaning.
