A violent zombie movie is now streaming online. Suki Waterhouse and Lena Headey are featured in the flick. The 2016 action-horror film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has started streaming on Netflix today.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies puts Jane Austen’s Regency-era characters in a world overrun by the undead, with Lily James leading a cast that includes Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance, Suki Waterhouse and Lena Headey.
Burr Steers directed the movie and also wrote the screenplay. Cross Creek Pictures, along with QC Entertainment and Allison Shearmur Productions, produced it. Made on a $28 million budget, it earned $16.4 million worldwide after its theatrical release on February 5, 2016, per The Numbers.
The project spent years in development before reaching theaters. Lionsgate began developing the movie in 2009 with Natalie Portman attached. David O. Russell and Craig Gillespie were later involved as directors before Steers ultimately took over.
The story takes place in an alternate version of 19th-century England. An undead plague has spread across the country after first appearing in the early 1700s. The British government responds by building a 100-foot defensive wall and moat around London known as the Great Barrier.
How Pride and Prejudice and Zombies reimagined a literary classic for modern audiences
The story follows Elizabeth Bennet, played by James, and her sisters Jane, Kitty, Lydia, and Mary. Along with dealing with marriage expectations, the sisters train to fight zombies and protect themselves from the growing threat.
Their lives become more complicated after wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley, played by Booth, arrives at Netherfield with Fitzwilliam Darcy, portrayed by Riley. Darcy is a colonel in the King’s army who uses carrion flies to identify possible infections among members of high society.
The movie is based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 parody novel, which combined Austen’s original story with zombie horror.
The adaptation also changes several characters. Lady Catherine de Bourgh, played by Headey, becomes a highly skilled swordswoman. Meanwhile, George Wickham, played by Huston, leads a group of intelligent undead who eat pig brains to retain their thinking ability.
His plans eventually threaten London and its survivors.
