The Simpsons Movie 2 could be getting a new title, with a surprising sci-fi plot like Avengers or Interstellar. A new rumor points to another possible title for the long-awaited sequel. The same report has also revealed a potential plot involving a major science-fiction concept.
Marvel scooper Daniel Richtman wrote in a post on X, “The story of The Simpsons Movie 2 will revolve around a space-time wormhole that mysteriously opens in Springfield, bringing the Simpsons family and the whole gang from 20 years in the future back to the present. The Simpsons we know must fight these older versions of themselves while getting a glimpse into their dark future.”
In another post, he added, “Also, they’re thinking about calling it The Simpsons vs. The Future. The New Simpsons Movie is just a placeholder. But they are considering a few other titles as well.”
Neither the reported storyline nor the potential title has been confirmed by Disney or 20th Century Studios. The project remains in production ahead of its scheduled 2027 theatrical release.
What else do we know about The Simpsons Movie 2?
The Simpsons Movie 2 has an official release date of September 3, 2027, but its final title has not yet been approved. Producer Matt Selman previously confirmed that “The New Simpsons Movie” is only a working title. He told Variety, “The working title is New Simpsons Movie, but we might have an actual title. It hasn’t been approved yet.”
The sequel is being developed by 20th Century Studios, 20th Century Animation, and Gracie Films. Matt Groening is listed as a writer and producer on the project.
The screenplay is reportedly complete, although the studio has not revealed official story details. No trailer has been released yet, and further information about the returning characters and plot remains limited.
The upcoming film will follow The Simpsons Movie, which arrived in theaters in 2007. The original animated feature earned more than $536 million worldwide.
The sequel has also received a $21.9 million California production incentive. It became one of the first animated films to qualify under the state’s expanded production program.
