The director of 28 Years Later has provided a major update about the third installment in the new trilogy. However, there is a catch, as this update brings both good and bad news for the Cillian Murphy movie.
In an interview at the Zurich Film Festival, director Danny Boyle confirmed that the third part of 28 Years Later is in the works. According to Variety, Boyle said, “28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it. Quite when I’m not sure, but there’s a script – a very good script by Alex Garland.”
The bad news is that the director is not sure when production will start or when the movie will be released, but the good news is that they already have a script ready. Moreover, Boyle confirmed that the third movie would also feature Murphy.
Danny Boyle teases a significant role for Cillian Murphy
According to Boyle, the upcoming third installment of the 28 Years Later movie will feature “a lot of Cillian Murphy,” thereby teasing a key role for him. He said, “[It will have] a lot of Cillian Murphy in it. Whether he’ll take his kit off anymore, that I don’t know. He’s got the Oscar now.”
The Peaky Blinders star had his breakthrough by playing Jim in the franchise’s original 2002 movie, 28 Days Later. The actor then made a cameo toward the end of the 2026 movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, surprising fans. The upcoming movie is set to pick up from the events of the 2026 feature; however, the plot details are not confirmed.
Recalling Murphy’s role in 28 Days Later, Boyle admitted that he was surprised by the actor’s physique. The director said, “He’s [Murphy] gorgeous. When we took his kit off, I couldn’t believe it. He looked like Iggy Pop! Everything was glistening. Oh my God. He’s just one of those people. He doesn’t work out or anything like that. He just looks like that.”
Boyle directed 28 Days Later and returned to helm 28 Years Later.
