Brad Pitt‘s latest dog movie has critics utterly shocked for one particular reason. Directed by David Ayer, Heart of the Beast has appealed to all.
According to the initial reactions, several critics have described the survival thriller as a love story. These positive reviews have also been reflected in the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score. Ayer’s feature had scored a solid 96% on the Tomatometer from 25 reviews at the time of writing this article.
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Don’t be fooled. Heart of the Beast is actually a love story, and one of the most moving to come along in a long time. That it’s a love story between a man and his dog doesn’t at all detract from its emotional impact.”
Reeling Reviews‘ Laura Clifford noted, “David Ayer gets to the heart of the matter within his survivor adventure tale, James and Odin’s literal love story, the bond between man and dog so strong, it’s palpable.”
Not every critic loved the story, but many connected with the emotion
Critics call Heart of the Beast a straightforward film that lands emotionally through Odin and James’ bond portrayal. Carla Hay from Culture Mix commented on the film, saying, “Heart of the Beast pulls at viewers’ heartstrings in this predictable but effective survival story of a U.S. Army veteran and his loyal German Shepherd companion trying to find safety in the Alaskan wilderness.”
Fiction Machine‘s Grant Watson reviewed the 101-minute action-adventure, stating, “While it does not stretch its formula in any profound way, it does exactly what it advertises and is unashamed in doing it. I am not even a dog person really, but James and Odin’s adventure hooked me very effectively.”
Written by Cameron Alexander, the cast features J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe alongside Brad Pitt. The Paramount Pictures project is scheduled to hit the theaters on September 25, 2026.
