How Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman’s Real-Life Sisterhood Outlasted Practical Magic

For fans of Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are two stars whose on-screen sisterhood turned into a real-life bond that has lasted for nearly three decades.

As Bullock and Kidman reunite for Practical Magic 2, the two Oscar winners reflected on the 28-year bond in a recent interview with PEOPLE. It began while making the 1998 fantasy, Practical Magic, and continued long after the original movie ended.

“If you could only keep one memory from working together, which moment would you choose and why?” Bullock asked during their interview.

“Our quiet conversations,” Kidman replied.

“Yes. This time around, we got to share things… We’re each other’s life raft,” Bullock noted.

To which Kidman responded, “And then… [She motions zipping her lips.]”

The first Practical Magic was not an immediate success. Critics were largely unimpressed, and the movie struggled at the box office. Regardless of how the movie performed, the two developed a deep mutual understanding and close connection while working together on set.

How life’s biggest challenges brought them even closer

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s relationship has continued through major changes in both of their lives. The actresses experienced career shifts, family changes, and personal losses while remaining supportive of each other away from the spotlight.

Kidman lost her father, Antony, in 2014, while Bullock experienced the passing of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, in 2023. Their friendship endured through those difficult periods as well as the demands of motherhood and their careers.

Returning for Practical Magic 2 gave the longtime friends an opportunity to work together again. Bullock and Kidman also serve as producers on the sequel, which draws from Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic.

Their return brings them back as Sally and Gillian Owens, the sisters whose story began in the 1998 film. The reunion, therefore, carries significance beyond simply bringing back two popular characters.

After nearly 30 years, Bullock and Kidman are returning to a franchise that helped establish a friendship that has lasted through much bigger changes in their lives.
