Andrew Garfield’s Secret Robin Hood Movie Is Finally in Theaters Today

Andrew Garfield‘s secret Robin Hood movie is finally here. It has been released in theatres today, September 10, 2026. The action period drama The Uprising has long been awaited since it was teased as a Robin Hood origin story.

Also starring alongside him are Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, Katherine Waterston, and Tom Hollander. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the historical action drama follows a 14th-century English farmer dubbed “Ploughman,” played by Garfield. As Ploughman, he leads a massive grassroots rebellion against the heavy taxation and tyranny of King Richard II during the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.

The surprising Robin Hood connection behind Andrew Garfield’s new movie

Earlier this year, Focus Features shared a promotional clip of Garfield in The Uprising on X with the tagline: “Witness the rise of Robin Hood in THE UPRISING.”

Soon after, Entertainment Film Distributors (the film’s U.K. distributor) issued an official statement to clear the air on the project’s actual premise. Per GamesRadar+, the statement said, “The Uprising is a historical epic about the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood. The U.K. marketing campaign does not make any reference to Robin Hood.”

It highlighted that promotional assets “issued by other countries that may appear in the U.K. online and on social media referencing Robin Hood are not issued or approved by us.”

However, as per Slate‘s review, the movie “certainly has some Robin Hood–ness thrust upon it, even if Garfield is never called Robin, or anything of the sort, by name.” Or, as the Daily Beast said, The Uprising “can be read as either a prequel to the English hero’s classical tale or a straightforward historical action-adventure.”

Garfield himself also commented on the Robin Hood energy to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining, “The Robin Hood aspect is more of an emergent energy and archetype within our story. It’s a figure that starts to emerge from the unconscious and the ground during periods of time when common folk are feeling disempowered, abused, violated and separated from the dignity of living their own lives.”

Now that The Uprising is out in theatres, fans can watch it for themselves and decide whether it truly counts as a secret Robin Hood movie.
