Practical Magic 2 director Susanne Bier has revealed why the production decided to recast the role of Kylie Owens in the sequel. Originally, the role was essayed by Westworld alum Evan Rachel Wood in Practical Magic. Wood revealed that she was not offered the role for the sequel.
Bier revealed that in the film, Kylie Owens and her sister, who are children of Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens, have just graduated from college and needed to look the part. She said, “It had to be a certain age group; in the story they’re just like literally out of college, and with Joey and Maisie it just felt completely right.”
This led to Evan Rachel Wood being replaced by Joey King, and Alexandra Artrip’s Antonia now being played by Game of Thrones alum Maisie Williams.
King revealed in another Hollywood Reporter interview that she had a conversation with Wood about taking over the role. She said, “I just was so appreciative of the support that she showed to me and to the rest of the cast. She is so talented and so beautiful and she made this role so special when she was a young girl. I feel so grateful to be able to play Kylie at this age but I love Evan so much and I’m so appreciative of her kind words and the exchange that her and I shared.”
What is Practical Magic 2 about?
Practical Magic 2 is set twenty-five years after the events of the original film. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as the Owen sisters. The sequel is based on the 2021 novel The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman. Hoffman had also penned the source material for the original film, also titled Practical Magic, which was published in 1995.
Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also return to reprise their roles from the first film. New faces that have been added to the cast include Invincible alum Lee Pace, Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
The movie sees the Owens family reunite as they come together to face a curse that has haunted their family for centuries. The events of the film are triggered when King’s Kylie Owens begins uncovering her own dark abilities.
