Tyler Perry’s Doing Life follows an unlikely bond forged through heartfelt letters
According to the official logline, Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is a “gritty and gripping urban drama that explores the life of a single mother fighting for survival and a reformed ex-con with untapped talents who forge an unexpected bond.”
The trailer introduces Naomi Baker as Anika and Jay Reeves as Carousel, the movie’s protagonists. The flashback at the beginning of the clip shows that the pair met when Anika was pregnant and working at Holloway Correctional. When a riot broke out at the facility, Reeves saved her and the baby from danger.
After Carousel got out of prison, the pair reconnected and began to form an unlikely relationship, exchanging letters and supporting each other, despite disapproval from Anika’s parents. The trailer then features a montage of several dramatic and heartfelt moments from the movie.
Sharing what inspired the story of Doing Life, Perry told People, “I’ve had people in my life who reminded me of both of these characters, people who come out of prison looking for a second chance, and single mothers who are doing everything they can to provide for their children.”
Perry added, “I was inspired by the resilience I’ve seen in both and by the idea that sometimes the people we least expect can understand each other in ways no one else can.”
