Scoob! prequel co-director Michael Kurinsky isn’t giving up on his shelved film. He now wants Warner Bros. to release it following Coyote vs. Acme’s theatrical debut. The director’s new appeal asks whether a new entertainment company can step in and give the completed Scooby-Doo film a chance.
In an Instagram post, Kurinsky noted that his team completed Scoob! Holiday Haunt animated feature before the studio pulled the plug. His comments come after Coyote vs. Acme found a new path to theaters when Ketchup Entertainment acquired the shelved film from Warner Bros. The filmmaker hopes Scoob! Holiday Haunt could receive similar treatment.
“In the light of @coyoteacmemovie I have to bring awareness to everyone again no matter how much it hurts,” Kurinsky wrote. He called the movie “every bit a Scooby-Doo mystery ready to be watched every Christmas with an A-list cast.” He then asked: “Who could be our @ketchupentertainment?”
What we know about Scoob! Holiday Haunt’s story and cast
The unreleased mystery comedy film serves as a festive prequel to the 2020 animated feature Scoob!. It was originally scheduled for a December 2022 release on HBO Max, but Warner Bros. shelved the project in August of that year. The decision came as part of the studio’s cost-cutting measures and shift toward prioritizing theatrical releases over streaming titles.
Based on Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo franchise, the story follows ten-year-old Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Scooby-Doo as they visit a Christmas-themed resort to celebrate Scooby-Doo’s first Christmas. Fred’s uncle Ned owns the popular destination. Scooby and the gang must solve a challenging mystery when a spooky ghost haunts the resort.
Kurinsky co-directed the film alongside Bill Haller, based on a screenplay by Paul Dini and Tony Cervone.
Speaking of the cast, Will Forte voiced Shaggy, and Frank Welker voiced Scooby-Doo. Mckenna Grace voiced Young Daphne, while Ariana Greenblatt played Young Velma. Cristo Fernández voiced Fred. Mark Hamill, Ming-Na Wen, and Clancy Brown were also among the cast members attached to the movie. Iain Armitage was set to voice Young Shaggy.
For now, Scoob! Holiday Haunt remains in limbo. With Kurinsky’s recent comments, the project may finally get a chance to reach an audience.
