Unabomber Trailer: Russell Crowe & Shailene Woodley Bring Ted Kaczynski’s Story to Netflix

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Unabomber, an upcoming crime drama thriller starring Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe, and Shailene Woodley. The feature chronicles the life of Ted Kaczynski, who was known as the Unabomber, and the long-running FBI investigation that eventually brought him down.

Directed by Janus Metz, the screenplay for the film was written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves. Distributed by Netflix, the narrative is inspired by the true events of nationwide mail bombings that unfolded across the USA back in 1978 and continued for almost two decades. Jacob Tremblay portrays the role of young Ted Kaczynski.

The logline of Unabomber reads, “Inspired by true events, UNABOMBER follows Ted Kaczynski’s (Jacob Tremblay) transformation from 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber.”

The logline further continues, “Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Russell Crowe), Kaczynski’s troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Shailene Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.”

Produced by Sophie Cassidy for 2.0 Entertainment, the 97-minute docudrama also features Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca in key supporting roles.

What happens in the Unabomber trailer?

The trailer for Unabomber opens in 1994 in the aftermath of a devastating mail-bomb explosion. News reports in the preview confirm that the attack claimed the lives of three people while injuring twenty-three others, setting the stage for the FBI’s manhunt. The clip then shifts back in time to trace Kaczynski’s formative years.

The preview flashes back to 1958, where Jacob Tremblay is introduced as Theodore John Kaczynski, aka Ted Kaczynski. Kaczynski attends Harvard University as a prodigy. He says, “When I look around our society, it seems to me like it needs to change.”

The 2-minute 47-second trailer also sheds light on the relationship between Henry Murray, played by Crowe, and Kaczynski. “There’s something special about you,” says Murray to young Kaczynski.

Donald J. Lee, Sam Chalsen, and Nelson Greaves serve as executive producers on the project in association with MRC. Unabomber is scheduled to launch globally on Netflix on September 25, 2026.
