Tom Cruise seems to have finally found the one role that all of his movies prepared him for. Featuring in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest project, the Mission: Impossible star made a surprising admission.
Cruise will play the character Digger Rockwell in Digger. The 64-year-old elaborated that each of his movies had made significant contributions to his development as an actor in his ambitious role. He told Empire, “It took all of my knowledge, from all of the years of every film I made, to be able to play this character and fulfill the ambition of this movie.”
Over the years, Cruise has starred in some big-budget movies. Among his most famous credits, Mission: Impossible ranks highest. Taking on the role of Ethan Hunt, he mesmerized fans with his risky stunts and high-octane action sequences. Some of his other notable appearances include the Top Gun franchise, Eyes Wide Shut, and Jack Reacher.

In a conversation with Empire, Iñárritu stated that the central plot of Digger is that the greatest threat to humanity is humans themselves. Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, is an oil tycoon. After unleashing a catastrophe himself, Digger is on a mission to undo the damage and emerge as “humanity’s savior.”
The summary of the feature, per IMDb, reads, “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
Elaborating on how he and Cruise built Digger’s character, the director wanted someone who could represent the black-and-white shades within a human being at the same time. Iñárritu explained, “I knew exactly this guy. Reality gives us the events, but imagination lets us recognize ourselves in them. Literally, this film is about us. The film revolves around these three ancient forces, which are greed, power, and responsibility.”
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, Digger is set for its theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
