Michael 2 star has discussed how the biopic sequel will address allegations and controversies surrounding Michael Jackson. The biographical drama about Michael Jackson, Michael, was released on April 24, 2026. Following its success, a sequel will soon enter production.
In Michael, Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, portrayed the singer-songwriter. As he gears up to reprise the same role in Michael 2, he was asked about the sequel’s plot. To that, Jaafar told GQ, “I think the second film will give even more insight from his point of view, because at the end of the day, [the allegations] are always from someone else’s.”
The 30-year-old added, “It’s someone else’s story. It’s someone else’s idea of what it is, and it’s mainly driven by an agenda. And that’s really the issue we’ve been having as a family – not having Michael’s voice being heard. I think that’s very, very important, especially in the late years.”
Jaafar Jackson has spent three years mastering the art of portraying the ‘King of Pop’ in the biopic. Reflecting on the bond he shared with his uncle, he told GQ, “As a kid, I was like, That’s Michael Jackson. Then, in person, it was like, Oh, that’s my uncle. I never had [the former] thought in person.”

Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, was distributed by Lionsgate. The movie reportedly had a budget of $155,000,000, per The Numbers. However, it grossed $1,021,426,595 worldwide, 6.6 times its total budget. Lionsgate is looking to kick off filming for Michael 2 in late 2026 or early 2027, according to Variety. Fuqua is expected to direct the sequel. The budget has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Adam Fogelson, the Chairman of Lionsgate, confirmed that the sequel would incorporate several sequences previously shot but not used in Michael. He told Variety, “We are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest, best sequel. That is what the audience is going to want and deserve after the experience we gave them the first time.”
Michael is currently available for streaming on Starz. Audiences can also watch the film by digitally renting or purchasing it on Prime Video and Apple TV.
