‘So Gifted’: Hayden Panettiere Tributes Pour In From Heroes, Nashville, and Scream Co-Stars

Hollywood is mourning the sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who passed away suddenly at the age of 36 on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Panettiere built a career spanning over three decades after making her on-screen debut as a child at just 11 months old.

Following the tragic news of her death in South Carolina, numerous co-stars, colleagues, and long-time friends paid tribute to the late star on Monday. Oscar winner Viola Davis, who starred alongside Panettiere in the 2016 legal drama Custody, honored the actress in an emotional Instagram post.

“What an amazing talent you were….so gifted,” Davis wrote. She also described Panettier as an “old, wise soul with such a deep heart.” Davis reflected on seeing her rise to stardom, which left a lasting legacy. She added, “I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes,” and sent prayers to her family and daughter.

Bethany Joy Lenz, who met Panettiere while working on CBS’s soap opera Guiding Light in the late 1990s, shared a deeply personal tribute reflecting on their 26-year friendship. Lenz recalled meeting Panettiere when she was still a child actor. She remembered her intelligence and ability to understand complex scenes despite her young age.

“I’m crushed,” Lenz wrote. She also recalled Panettiere as a “wild little blonde” who ran through the Screen Gems studio hallways.

Panettiere’s Scream VI co-star Melissa Barrera also expressed her sadness over the news, sharing an Instagram Story with a photo of Panettiere captioned “Rest in Peace sweet Hayden.”

Hayden Panettiere’s return in Scream VI marked another chapter in her acting career

Panettiere achieved global fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet on NBC’s hit superhero series Heroes from 2006 to 2010. She later starred as rising country star Juliette Barnes on the musical drama series Nashville from 2012 to 2018, earning two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

After making her debut in films like A Bug’s Life (1998) and Remember the Titans (2000), Panettiere joined the iconic horror franchise Scream as fan-favorite character Kirby Reed in 2011’s Scream 4. Her return in 2023’s Scream VI marked an important move in her career, reintroducing her to a new generation of horror fans.

Panettiere’s recent film, Sleepwalker, marked her final performance following its release in January 2026.
