Illumination’s Box Office Disappointment Becomes a Hit Movie on Streaming Charts

Illumination‘s recent animated film struggled at the box office but shines on home screens. The 90-minute movie was recently released on digital media and quickly topped the charts.

Minions & Monsters has climbed to the No.1 spot on Fandango’s premium video-on-demand chart for its opening week, August 10 through August 16. The animated film outperformed Jackass: Best and Last and Young Washington, both of which were released on the same day as Minions & Monsters. They secured the second and third spots, respectively.

The streaming success comes after a weaker-than-expected theatrical run. Minions & Monsters opened to $61.4 million over the five-day Independence Day weekend. That figure is lower than studios’ expectations and became the lowest opening in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise.

However, the movie performed well at the global box office. Minions & Monsters earned more than $420 million, including a $182 million domestic share, according to The Numbers.

The streaming market gives theatrical releases another chance to find an audience

The digital marketplace consistently helps films that struggle in theatres find a new audience. A movie’s theatrical box office performance doesn’t always predict how it will fare after reaching home screens. Streaming and PVOD platforms often reach audiences who pass over theatrical releases.

That approach is working out well after Minions & Monsters’ Fandango release. Even though it doesn’t fulfill Illumination’s box office expectations, its top spot on the streaming charts shows its real demand.

The top 10 list also includes Supergirl at No.7, another box-office bomb, which garnered only $126 million against a $170 million production budget, according to The Numbers. The movie was released digitally on July 28 and is still going strong on the streaming charts. The list also extends to titles like Evil Dead Burn, The Invite, Michael, Disclosure Day, Scary Movie (2026) – Extended Cut, and Backrooms.

Minions & Monsters is currently available to rent or purchase on Fandango. Illumination also plans a physical release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 8, 2026.
