Scapegoat: Ari Aster’s New Scarlett Johansson Movie Gets Confusing Plot Update

Filmmaker Ari Aster‘s next film, Scapegoat, is becoming more mysterious, and no one seems to know what its plot is about. The film has already landed Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson as the lead, while a new cast update confirms another actor’s name.

According to Deadline, Frankenstein star Jacob Elordi is now in talks to join the lead alongside Johansson. While the news is exciting, reports surrounding the plot remain unclear, with different versions pointing in wild directions.

As the portal reported, some insiders believe Scapegoat follows a doctor who treats an internet-famous person. Others claimed it leans into a sci-fi romance, while a few insisted it is closer to a traditional drama for Aster, who is not known for either of anything. As of now, the filmmaker or the studio behind the movie has not said anything about the plot.

Despite the confusion on the plot, the movie’s casting remains solid. Scarlett Johansson was reportedly Ari Aster’s first pick for the lead role from early development. Scapegoat is Aster’s follow-up to Eddington (2025).

Jacob Elordi is now in talks for the movie’s male lead. Even though Aster met with multiple artists, he had the Australian actor in mind from the start. If everything goes well, the film will likely start filming next year.

Elordi, fresh off an Oscar nomination for his role in Frankenstein, had plenty of offers to consider but took some time away after a demanding few years. The actor broke his break streak when negotiations for Scapegoat reportedly happened last week.

Ari Aster will direct the upcoming film from his own screenplay. He will also handle producing duties alongside Lars Knudsen through their Square Peg banner. A24 will distribute the film.

For now, A24 and Aster are keeping the plot details secret. The movie has a long road ahead before going into production. Aster has built a reputation for bold, unpredictable filmmaking, which may also make fans expect a unique experience this time.
