Keanu Reeves and Kirsten Dunst’s upcoming movie may not reach theaters this year. The early rumors seem to be true, as The Entertainment System Is Down is now being considered for a 2027 premiere.
The film was previously expected to debut at the Cannes Film Festival. However, according to a report from Variety, director Ruben Östlund has opted to hold the project, with a Cannes premiere now being considered for 2027.

The Entertainment System Is Down is an English-language satire from Östlund, the Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker behind The Square and Triangle of Sadness.
The story follows passengers aboard a long-haul flight from London to Sydney whose in-flight entertainment systems stop working mid-journey. Left without movies, music, or other digital distractions, the travelers are forced to face several hours of absolute boredom.
The project was filmed inside a real Boeing 747 that Östlund acquired specifically for the production. Keanu Reeves and Kirsten Dunst lead an ensemble cast alongside Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, Vincent Lindon, and Tobias Menzies.
Östlund wrote the screenplay and serves as director, while Erik Hemmendorff and Philippe Bober are producing. A24 acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the film.
The director previously explained that the film required extensive editing. Speaking to Deadline at the Göteborg Film Festival, Ostlund said, “At the end of February, we’re going to decide whether to go to Cannes this year or actually wait and edit one more year before we release the film.”
The possible delay doesn’t indicate an issue with the film’s quality. Variety reported that several major films are leaving the 2026 awards race because studios want stronger festival launches and additional post-production time.
A24 has not yet announced an official theatrical release date for The Entertainment System Is Down, meaning fans will likely need to wait until 2027 for its first public screening.
