Spring Breakers 2 has updated its director to a former Disney star after a creative shakeup. The sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2013 cult classic movie was previously going to be directed by Matthew Bright, known for Freeway, Ted Bundy, and Tip Toes.
However, former Disney star Bella Thorne confirmed that she will be writing and helming the sequel in an interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast. This will be her second directorial product after the star made her feature directorial debut with Color Your Hurt.
The American actress also added that the second installment will differ from the prequel. She said, “This time, things are different. They are crazy. There’s a lot of craziness, there’s a lot of litness in this movie.’
Part two of the cult classic is titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain. Thorne is also starring in the movie alongside Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker.
How Bella Thorne went from star to filmmaker on the sequel
The Disney star was first cast as one of the lead roles in the sequel. However, on Alex Cooper’s podcast, she mentioned that the producers asked her to test-write a script after watching her directorial debut feature.
Thorne revealed, “The producers watched Color Your Hurt, which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it. And they loved it! And now I’m writing and directing Spring Breakers 2.”
Color Your Hurt, also written by the actress, is a coming-of-age thriller based on her 2024 short film Unsettled. The movie follows the life and struggles of a young gay man growing up in the Bible Belt. The movie wrapped its production in late 2025, but does not have a release date yet.
Moreover, the American singer added that the production team for Spring Breakers 2 also includes some members from part one. These include Chris Hanle and Jordan Gertner, who will serve as producers. As for the director of the first movie, Korine previously stated to The Hollywood Reporter that he has “no interest” in the sequel.
Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain is still in development and has no release date yet.
