Tom Cruise’s Digger Trailer Is Unconventional, and That’s Exactly Why It Works

Tom Cruise‘s Digger trailer is one of the most unconventional we’ve seen. While some may be mixed on it, it’s actually a brilliant piece of marketing for the upcoming movie.

Diggers is the latest movie from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who previously directed movies like Birdman and The Revenant. Alongside Cruise, the movie also stars Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, and more. The film is set to release in theaters on October 2, 2026.

While little of Digger is known, the film has begun its marketing cycle with a very unconventional trailer. The trailer for the movie, instead of showing off much of the film, instead highlights Cruise’s legendary career, with clips from some of his most famous movies popping up before we see any Digger footage.

Tom Cruise’s Digger trailer is like nothing we’ve seen, and that’s what makes it perfect

The latest trailer for Digger left fans extremely divided over the upcoming movie. The three-minute trailer spends about 90% of its runtime simply showing off clips of Cruise’s biggest movies, including A Few Good Man, Risky Business, Top Gun, Rain Man, Mission: Impossible, and more. It’s only when the trailer ends do we get the tease for Digger, which presents itself as the culmination of Cruise’s career.

After its release, fans were left a bit confused on the trailer. Many wondered why the movie would spend most of its trailer time advertising other Cruise work. However, it’s actually a fairly smart way of doing so, for a number of reasons. For one, leaning on the absolute star power that Cruise has is big for a movie that’s largely staying mysterious in the moment. Much of Digger is unknown, so instead of showing too much of the movie, leaning on Cruise’s name is an easy way to get some extra excitement in.

On top of that, it also helps build excitement for when more of the movie does come to light. We all know Cruise is a star, and his movies will command attention. However, the next time we see information on the movie, we’ll be much more interested after hearing about it with this unconventional marketing beforehand.
