Avengers: Doomsday will feature multiple universes but it may have nixed one of the MCU’s coolest ideas. The upcoming film will feature the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four teaming up to battle Doctor Doom.
What creative idea did Avengers: Doomsday reportedly nix?
According to scooper Alex Perez, Avengers: Doomsday was planned to feature an animated universe. However, that has been scrapped. “From what I have been informed, that idea is no longer happening,” wrote Perez.
“At the moment, there are 6 universes that we will see in Avengers: Doomsday. Those are: Main MCU, Fantastic Four, X-Men Universe, Doom’s Original Universe, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Universe, and a pocket dimension (though I might be describing that last one incorrectly; it’s basically ‘the universe that’s hidden away’).”
It should be noted that this is only a rumor, and should be treated as such, as official Avengers: Doomsday plot details still remain under wraps. Marvel Studios is expected to reveal more details about the film during its San Diego Comic-Con presentation in July.
Regardless of whether Doomsday deals with an animated universe, it won’t be the first time that an MCU movie has dealt with the idea. In 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a brief moment sees the titular Doctor and America Chavez being hurled through an animated universe. Of course, the MCU isn’t totally averse to animated universes, as evidenced by the exploration of multiple ones in Marvel’s What If…? and Marvel Zombies.
The rumor also points to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom hailing from a different universe from Earth-828, which the Fantastic Four inhabit. Recent rumors have also pointed to an appearance from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in the film, which tracks well with the scoop.
Before Doomsday, Marvel Studios will release Avengers: Endgame in theaters again, now with a new title and post-credits scene. The film will also reportedly bring back a founding member of the Avengers.
