The full Heart of the Beast trailer is now finally out. Academy Award winner Brad Pitt‘s latest collaboration with director David Ayer is surprisingly reminiscent of Leonardo DiCaprio’s acclaimed 2015 film The Revenant.
“After a harrowing plane crash, Special Forces officer James Belmont and his combat dog, Odin, find themselves stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Together, they are forced into a brutal fight for survival against the elements,” reads the official synopsis. “Heart of the Beast is an intense adventure thriller that explores the unbreakable bond between a man and his best friend as they face their greatest battle yet.”
Heart of the Beast is directed by Ayer, with Cameron Alexander writing the screenplay. Joining Pitt in the survival thriller movie are J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. In addition to leading the cast, Pitt is also serving as a producer, with Whiplash director Damien Chazelle executive producing.
Heart of the Beast trailer review
Watching the Heart of the Beast trailer, it instantly drew me into the strong bond between Pitt’s character and his loyal canine companion. For me, it’s definitely one of the trailer’s highlights. Seeing a glimpse of their shared trauma and the dangerous challenges they’ll go through together would make anyone immediately root for their survival. Through their genuine interactions, we got to see that the film isn’t only a high-stakes thrill ride of action, but it’s also a heartfelt and beautiful story of friendship and perseverance.
The trailer also teases Pitt’s gritty and physically demanding performance as a former Army Special Forces soldier, who must brave the unforgiving conditions of the Alaskan wilderness while trying to care for his retired combat dog’s welfare. In addition, he’ll also deal with the painful trauma of the past. This marks Pitt’s first time starring in a movie without a large ensemble cast in nearly a decade, after James Gray’s Ad Astra film. His character’s grueling journey reminded me of Leonardo DiCaprio’s award-winning performance in 2015’s The Revenant. Both movies are survival thrillers that take place in the wilderness anchored by a big-name leading man.
Overall, the trailer did a good job showcasing Ayer’s vision for the movie. His signature gritty style and visceral realism shine through the intense action sequences. This, combined with Pitt’s compelling performance and chemistry with his canine co-star, convinces me that the upcoming film could be a chance for Pitt to score another golden statue in the near future.
