MySpace Hacked: Over 300 Million Old Accounts Have Been Leaked Online

Many of us have probably left our old MySpace accounts to continue floating around the Internet, existing only as bygone relics from a regrettable time in the web’s history in which people with obscenely long fringes begged their friends for complimentary comments on their profile photos. However, now MySpace has been hacked, with as many as 360 million accounts having been compromised and potentially sold online.

The hack was confirmed by MySpace’s parent company Time Inc., with a statement from the organization revealing that the hack had taken place prior to the Memorial Day weekend. The hack effectively compromised accounts from the old MySpace platform, before the social networking site underwent major changes on June 11, 2013.

In a blog post on the MySpace site, the company stated that they believed the hack had been orchestrated by notable hacker “Peace,” who has previously carried out similar attacks on the likes of LinkedIn and Tumblr. MySpace noted that the company does not store any credit card information, meaning that the personal information that has been leaked solely consists of email addresses, usernames and passwords. MySpace added that the company has disabled all affected passwords, meaning that those who have obtained this account information cannot use it to access any accounts.

Myspace has also contacted law authorities and is currently using automated tools to block any suspicious activity that has taken place on the site, with the blog post suggesting that “if you use passwords that are the same or similar to your Myspace password on other online services, we recommend you set new passwords on those accounts immediately.”
