Photographer Devin Allen Revisits Baltimore One Year after Its Fiery Unrest

When Baltimore residents took to the streets last April following the arrest of Freddie Gray, and his gruesome death while in police custody, local amateur photographer Devin Allen followed the story and captured public response with his camera. He posted his images on his Instagram account, and like a character in a Hollywood movie became an overnight media sensation. (Crave coverage from back then can be found here.) Stars like Rihanna, Ice Cube and Beyonce tweeted his pictures. One of his photos was used for the cover of Time magazine. He was commissioned by Under Armour to photograph basketball player Steph Curry and boxer Saúl Álvarez, and Samsung sponsored the youth program he founded and oversees. To commemorate the anniversary of Gray’s death and the civil unrest that followed, the 27-year-old Baltimore native has just allowed the Baltimore Sun website to publish a treasure trove of images he captured last year (some never before seen on a major media platform.) Here are just a few.
