Rare Footage Shows James Dyson Talking About His New Vacuum Cleaner in 1983

In the one and only time a vacuum cleaner will be included in anything moderately interesting, this 1983 interview with James Dyson explaining his new invention reveals a time in UK history when those who didn’t own a Dyson vacuum weren’t looked upon as some kind of lunatic.

The interview, which was originally broadcast on the Thames Television show Afternoon Plus, saw Dyson explaining the difficulties in getting an invention to be produced on a mass scale. It also showed Dyson unveiling his new vacuum, the Cylon, for the show’s hosts. Explaining the three-year process behind the development of the product, Dyson reveals that UK manufacturers had turned down his offer for them to mass-produce it due to its lack of paper bags, as they were “a very lucrative source of income.” Dyson was the first inventor to create a vacuum that didn’t utilize a paper bag.

Dyson Ltd. was officially founded 10 years later in 1993, with the company now developing machines for over 70 countries worldwide. Watch the interview with James Dyson below:
