Apple Reveals the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus

Apple used its Apple Event today to reveal its heavily anticipated iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones, accompanied with the tagline “the only thing that’s changed is everything.”

Though the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus design looks very similar, Apple was very proud of its new 3D Touch addition, a “tremendous breakthrough” that essentially senses the force of your touch, using capacitive sensors that measure the distance between the glass and the backlight.

It essentially brings the functionality of the iPhone 6S in line with a computer, with the device able to differentiate between different button presses in order to alter their feedback, bringing up different options and menus as a result.

3D Touch allows users to “peek” at various items on the phone’s display. For instance, users can “peek” at Instagram thumbnails, bringing up the full image without directly loading it in order to offer them a glimpse of the image.

Aside from the 3D Touch, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will also feature some improvements under the hood, including a new A9 chip that, according to Apple, is 70% faster than the A8 and makes the iPhone 6S both “console class” and “desktop class,” which is a pretty misleading claim, given that it probably couldn’t run Crysis.

The iPhone 6S will feature a brand new camera, with a 12 megapixel new iSight camera, 50% more pixels than the previous iPhone and a more accurate autofocus.

Apple also highlighted a selection of stunning photographs which they claim had been taken using the iPhone 6S and hadn’t been retouched, including the one featured below:

Apple also announced that, for the first time ever, the iPhone 6S would boast ultra high-definition 4K video.

There will also be a 5 megapixel front-facing camera, along with Retina Flash that makes the device’s entire display light up 3 times brighter in order to provide better lighting.

Apple also debuted Live Photos, which allows users to change their default setting in order to extend the capture moment of photographs in order to turn them into miniature videos, that play a short clip when you press them using the device’s 3D Touch feature.

The tech giant also unveiled a new app for Android that will allow existing Android users to switch to iPhone, with the company wryly stating that it is “the neighborly thing to do.”

The iPhone 6S will be available on September 25th, with prices starting at 16GB of storage for $199, 64GB for $299 and 128GB for $399, while the iPhone 6S Plus will cost $299 for 16GB, $399 for 64GB and $499 for 128GB.

The company also announced that iOS 9 will be available starting next week, on September 16th.
