Shawnee Smith is an American actress probably best known for her roles on the sitcom “Becker” and the film franchise “Saw.”
Regarding “Saw,” she was the writer/director’s first choice to play the role as he had a crush on her since he was 14. Shawnee Smith has said she doesn’t like horror movies and is scared of her own movies.
As to the character of Amanda, Shawnee Smith said, “I take the scream queen title as an honor. I went from Becker to this character and they were so vastly different…it’s been a fun ride.”
Though born in South Carolina, she moved to Van Nuys, California when she was one after her parents divorced. She was a child actor, appearing on stage in “A Christmas Carol” from age 8 to 11.
Her other appearances include “Anger Management,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust,” among other projects. Her TV debut was in a commercial for McDonald’s in 1978. She won the Youth in Film Award for Best Actress for her role in “Crime of Innocence.”
Aside from acting, Shawnee Smith was part of a desert-country rock band called “Smith and Pyle” with actress Missi Pyle. The released their debut album “It’s OK to be Happy” in 2009. Previously, she had a band named “Fydolla Ho.” They released a full album and went on tour, but disbanded in 2004. She plays the guitar, piano, drums and sings. Though, she said in an interview that she doesn’t do music anymore because when her daughter turned 12 “just being up there felt ridiculous.”
Shawnee Smith homeschools her children.
She is divorced from Kai Mattoon and Jason Reposar. She has three children. She married her band mate Missi Pyle in a faux ceremony in support of repealing Prop 8 in California.
