Sarah Austin described herself on Twitter as “Stealth Startup Entrepreneur, Inventor, Futurist, Philanthropist, Eternal Love.” She said when she was 10 in 1996 her dad had a PC and under his supervision she would go online.


As a child, Sarah Austin moved from Arkansas to Tiburon in Marin County, California. In 2004, she graduated from high school. She took classes at San Francisco State University, and then Parsons The New School for Design in New York. In 2010, she was a Dominican University of California business management student.

Sarah Austin began her career as a tech news producer for UC Berkeley’s radio station. In 2007, Justin Kan asked her to “lifecast” her life 24/7 with wearable technology. “We said that it was a trend in exhibitionism and transparency that everyone would soon be doing. To an extent, we were right.”


In an interview with Mark Borden, he said, “she turns her life into content and [is] reinventing not only what it means to be a media personality, but is also defining the concept of the individual being the new network.”


Sarah Austin said influence is about “behavior, social capitol and a likeable personality. Social perception, impression management and persuasion are the three pillars of social capitol. It’s less about how many fans and followers you have, and more about what other people say about you,” (


Her worst experience in the digital world was when her twitter account was hacked by a phishing scam and posted sales tweets without her knowledge.


If she weren’t in new media, she’d like to do “something physically active. This might sound silly, but the career before I was thinking about was being a park ranger. I hike a lot. It’s beautiful here.”


Sarah Austin formed the company Pop17 and was a cast member of the Bravo series “Start-Ups: Silicon Valley.”
